According to a statement on Instagram by her husband, John Easterling, Olivia Newton-John died away quietly in Southern California this morning, surrounded by family and friends. Back in 2018, Newton-John disclosed that she was going through her third bout with cancer in 30 years.
Newton-John was born in the United Kingdom in 1948 and was the youngest of three children. When she was six-years-old, her family moved to Australia.
The singer won four Grammy awards and had five number-one hits. And perhaps she is best known for her role as Sandy in the hit 1978 movie Grease, starring alongside John Travolta. The duo had two hit songs from the soundtrack: “You’re the One That I Want” and “Summer Nights”.
John Travolta’s posted a very touching note to his Instagram account, remembering his friend:
In 1981, Newton-John released the song “Physical” (official music video here), which spent ten weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100, went double platinum, and became a Billboard Top Hot 100 Single of the 1980s. She’s also known for several other hits, including Magic (official music video here).
