Nearly 30,000 residents in Alaska’s biggest city are getting ready for a massive volcanic eruption.

Scientists have sounded the alarm about how the odds of it erupting in weeks have increased more now than before.

Mount Spurr is a massive 11,000-foot tall volcano that sits just 81 miles from the biggest city in the state and it’s all set to blow this year for the first time in nearly three decades.

City officials in Anchorage mentioned how they’re now raising the emergency planning level to level 2 so that means that it would ramp up communication with the public about this threat and public safety agencies would prepare to launch into eruption response protocols.
