A Democratic strategist who previously worked with former President Bill Clinton has dismissed the likelihood of left-wing Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York being the Democratic Party’s nominee for the 2028 presidential election.

In a recent interview on Fox News with guest host Kellyanne Conway, strategist Mark Penn expressed his belief that an AOC candidacy would only secure victory for the Democratic Party in a single state.

“Can you break this down for us? Do voters desire that youthful, progressive approach, perhaps with a hint of socialism? Or will they revert to someone like Kamala Harris, considering she might have needed more time?” asked Conway, a Republican str ategist and pollster. “Are we overlooking the bigger picture? Are there governors or figures like Stephen A. Smith? Additionally, what qualities is the Democratic Party seeking? Is it focused on the economy, immigration, social justice, or climate issues? What insights can you share about the polling within your party?” she inquired.

Penn responded, “In a scenario where the party lacks control over any branches of government and has experienced a significant electoral defeat, there is no clear leader. AOC is attempting to occupy that void. Bernie Sanders, as we have observed, could garner 30 to 40 percent of the Democratic primary vote. If she aims to build a substantial following, he is evidently passing the baton to her. There is indeed a robust left-wing faction within the Democratic Party. It’s worth noting that Democrats only secured one state in both 1972 and 1984.”

He added, “The Democratic Party has faced periods of isolation when it has leaned too far left. Therefore, this possibility is quite real. Regarding Harris, I firmly believe she will not return to the presidential race, and it is highly unlikely she would succeed in a presidential primary.”
