Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., is reportedly preparing for a major political move in 2028, either by launching a presidential campaign or challenging Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for his seat. According to Axios, her decision could dramatically alter the Democratic Party’s trajectory, pitting the progressive wing against the party establishment.

Ocasio-Cortez, 35, has spent 2025 expanding her political footprint. She has campaigned nationwide and across New York, held town halls in upstate regions, and poured resources into strengthening her digital presence. Her team has brought on former senior advisers to Sen. Bernie Sanders, signaling serious preparations for either a national or statewide campaign.

She’s also made significant investments in digital outreach. According to Chaotic Era editor Kyle Tharp, Ocasio-Cortez’s team has spent more on digital advertising in 2025 than nearly any other politician, attracting hundreds of thousands of new small-dollar donors. Her social media following now exceeds 36 million—far outpacing Schumer and most likely 2028 contenders.

Progressive allies increasingly view Ocasio-Cortez as the heir to Sanders’ movement. Ari Rabin-Havt, a longtime Sanders adviser, told Axios she not only has broader appeal but also a stronger digital infrastructure than Sanders had during his 2016 and 2020 campaigns.

Recent polling supports her momentum. An April Data for Progress survey showed Ocasio-Cortez leading Schumer by 19 points in a hypothetical 2028 Democratic primary. Though Schumer remains a powerful figure, his slipping popularity among the Democratic base may open the door for a serious challenge from the progressive firebrand.
