<\/p>\nJohnny Kelly loved his job. He worked at the grocery store, and he enjoyed working with people. He already knew most of the customers by name, and they all loved him for his helpful, friendly attitude.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, his boss, Mr. Tyrell, was less impressed. He was a sour, harsh man, and for him, only one thing counted \u2014 money. One day, Johnny\u2019s kindness set him off, and Mr. Tyrell reacted\u2026<\/p>\n
It all started on a Wednesday afternoon when a new customer walked in. The man was hobbling on clutches, and his pinned-up pants\u2019 leg revealed he\u2019d lost a limb.

\n\u201cSorry, Mr. Tyrell,\u201d Johnny said. \u201cThere was this gentleman with only one leg, and he couldn\u2019t carry his groceries\u2026\u201d One of the customers in line broke in before Mr. Tyrell could respond.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis young man was very kind,\u201d he said. \u201cI didn\u2019t mind waiting!\u201d The other customers agreed, and Mr. Tyrell smiled, but his eyes were ice cold.<\/p>\n
At closing time, he called Johnny into his office and held out a pink slip and a check. \u201cI don\u2019t care what those other fools say. You are here to work, not do charity!\u201d he said. \u201cEvery moment you\u2019re away from your work costs me money.<\/p>\n
\u201cMaking money is what life is all about, do you understand? I\u2019ve had enough of your rubbish. You\u2019re fired!\u201d
\n
\nJohnny looked at Mr. Tyrell\u2019s angry face and knew there was no point in arguing. He took his check, and he walked out. He had to start looking for a job straight away. His mom depended on him.<\/p>\n
The next morning, at 7:00 am, Johny was at the bus stop waiting to go into town to look for work. A car pulled up, and a friendly voice greeted him. \u201cHey there! Do you need a ride to the store?\u201d<\/p>\n
It was the man from the day before! \u201cHi,\u201d Johnny said. \u201cI\u2019m not going to the store. I don\u2019t work there anymore.\u201d

\nThe man looked surprised. \u201cWhy not?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n
Johnny blushed and explained, \u201cMr. Tyrell said I was away from the till for too long. He fired me.\u201d<\/p>\n
The man looked upset. \u201cThat was because of me!\u201d he cried. \u201cGet in the car. I\u2019ll take you wherever you want to go.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m going downtown to look for work,\u201d Johnny said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAre you?\u201d the man said. \u201cSo apart from working in a grocery store, what else can you do?\u201d
\n
\nJohnny looked embarrassed. \u201cMy mom says about the only thing I do well is play video games,\u201d he confessed.<\/p>\n
\u201cReally!\u201d the man said. He looked interested. \u201cWhat do you play, and what are your scores?\u201d<\/p>\n
To Johnny\u2019s surprise, the man knew a lot about video games and seemed pretty impressed by Johnny\u2019s opinion and ideas about gaming.<\/p>\n
\u201cWould you like to work for me?\u201d the man asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor you?\u201d asked Johnny. \u201cDoing what?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI want you to tell my games developer some of those ideas you shared with me,\u201d the man said. \u201cI own a company that creates games. I think you\u2019ll fit right in!\u201d<\/p>\n
A week later, Johnny started working at the man\u2019s company, and he loved it. His boss insisted he return to school and take night courses at the local college, but Johnny didn\u2019t mind.<\/p>\n
His friend with the one leg wasn\u2019t just a great boss; he was a mentor. Even though it was tough at first, little by little, with his help, Johny became the best developer in the company.<\/p>\n
He was earning five times what he\u2019d earned at the grocery store and doing something he loved, building a future, and it had all started with a kind gesture.<\/p>\n
