Margaret was trying to pick herself a nice canteloupe when she heard the baby cry. It was the loud, indignant scream of a very young baby and it was very close.<\/p>\n
She turned and behind her was a young man with a baby in a chest sling, pushing a shopping cart full of groceries. The man caught Margaret\u2019s eye and blushed. \u201cSorry,\u201d he said. \u201cHe\u2019s hungry.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNope,\u201d Margaret said grinning. \u201cThat\u2019s a Number 2 for sure!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo!\u201d the dad said. \u201cI changed his diaper ten minutes ago!\u201d<\/p>\n
Margaret laughed. \u201cThat\u2019s the wonder of babies!\u201d she smiled. \u201cThey\u2019re the gift that keeps on giving! Don\u2019t you live next door to me? You just moved in, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

The man nodded and looked helplessly down at the squalling baby and at the shopping cart. \u201cYes, I\u2019ll take him home,\u201d he sighed. \u201cAnother diaper change might kill me!\u201d<\/p>\n
He looked so downcast and so exhausted that Margeret heard herself saying. \u201cI\u2019ll do it!\u201d<\/p>\n
The man looked astounded and relieved, almost as if he\u2019d just won the lottery. \u201cYou will?\u201d he gasped. \u201cAre you sure?\u201d<\/p>\n

Margaret grinned. \u201cI have four kids and seven grandchildren. I\u2019m sure!\u201d<\/p>\n
Margaret went home with the man. He led her to a pretty nursery where she quickly changed his diaper. As soon as he felt clean and dry, the baby stopped crying. He looked up at Margaret with huge chocolate-brown eyes and sucked his fists.<\/p>\n
\u201cAren\u2019t YOU a beauty,\u201d Margeret crooned and cuddled him. She loved that delicious baby smell. \u201cOh, I miss this!\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n
Margaret reluctantly handed the baby over to the waiting father. \u201cYou and your wife are very lucky,\u201d she said. \u201cHe\u2019s the most adorable baby!\u201d<\/p>\n
The man looked away quickly, and Margaret saw him blink away tears. \u201cMy wife\u2026passed away when Nina was born,\u201d he said. \u201cA heart attack\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m so sorry,\u201d Margaret said and placed a gentle hand on the man\u2019s arm. \u201cIt\u2019s not easy. I know, my husband passed away a year ago, and it\u2019s still hard to face the day.\u201d<\/p>\n
The man nodded. \u201cI\u2019m Ben, by the way,\u201d he said. He patted the baby\u2019s bottom. \u201cAnd this is Joe. How about I make you a cup of coffee?\u201d Margaret and Ben sat in the kitchen and had some cappuccino while Joe napped.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo,\u201d Ben said. \u201cI\u2019m an architect, but since Valerie died I\u2019ve been on leave. I have a huge project, but now it\u2019s suspended\u2026 I don\u2019t want to leave Joe with someone I don\u2019t trust. He\u2019s all I\u2019ve got.\u201d<\/p>\n
Margaret said, \u201cYou could leave him with me a few mornings, see how it goes. It would do me good to have a baby in the house!\u201d<\/p>\n
Ben\u2019s face lit up. \u201cThat would be GREAT!\u201d he gasped. \u201cI\u2019d pay you of course!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cPlease,\u201d Margeret said. \u201cIt will be a pleasure!\u201d<\/p>\n
From then on, Ben would drop Joe off at Margaret\u2019s house. The mornings quickly became all day, every day. \u201cMargaret,\u201d Ben said firmly. \u201cYou must let me pay you.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked around Margaret\u2019s neat little house. The walls needed painting, and in spots the wooden floorboards were loose. \u201cYou can use the money, I know that!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBen,\u201d Margaret said. \u201cMy children and grandchildren are far away. When you bring me Joe every day, you make me feel as if I have a family. Please don\u2019t take that away from me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ben kissed Margaret\u2019s cheek. \u201cOk, Margaret,\u201d he said. \u201cI understand. But Ben immediately started hatching a cunning plan.<\/p>\n
When Joe was nearly a year old, Ben announced that he was taking a holiday. \u201cHere,\u201d he said, handing Margaret an envelope. \u201cYou\u2019re going on holiday too!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI am?\u201d gasped Margaret. She opened the envelope and found the vouchers for a plane ticket and a seven-day getaway at a luxury spa in Napa Valley. \u201cI can\u2019t accept this!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYep, you can!\u201d grinned Ben. \u201cThanks to you, I just landed a multi-million dollar project, so off you go and get spoiled.\u201d<\/p>\n
Margaret discovered that she loved being spoiled. She had a wonderful time at the spa and even made some new friends, but she was looking forward to going home and seeing Joe and Ben again.<\/p>\n
The taxi dropped her off at home, and Margaret slid the house keys into the lock. The door swung open. Margaret looked down at her key. \u201cI\u2026 This isn\u2019t my house!\u201d she exclaimed.<\/p>\n
Then a happy voice yelled: \u201cSURPRISE!\u201d<\/p>\n
Ben was standing in the sitting room with Joe in his arms and a huge grin on his face. Margaret looked around the room, astounded. The walls were painted the softest ivory, and the ceiling was a pale peach.<\/p>\n
The floorboards were glowing honey-colored wood. Her old couches were covered in a pale peach velvet and strewn with ivory cushions. A lovely vintage chandelier hung from her ceiling.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat have you done to my sitting room?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cI brought in my team and my decorator,\u201d Ben explained. \u201cWait until you see the kitchen. It\u2019s my favorite.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYAH!\u201d screamed Joe and reached out his arms for Margaret. \u201cBut\u2026 but\u2026 WHY?\u201d asked Margaret.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause,\u201d Ben said gently. \u201cYou deserve it. You are lovely, warm, generous, and gracious. This is a thank you from Joe and me, and I hope you will be in our lives forever!\u201d<\/p>\n
