In 1926, H.L. Reese covered a piece of peanut butter candy with chocolate from the factory near his home in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Before long, he developed the world\u2019s first peanut butter cup and opened his own factory, purchasing Hershey chocolate through a close partnership with the company.<\/p>\n
Nearly a century later, his great-grandson, Bill Reese, made the decision to end that relationship, citing Hershey\u2019s newfound \u201cwokeness\u201d as the reason.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt looks like there will be two kinds of candy in America,\u201d said Bill, \u201cwoke and regular. We want our candy to be regular, so we\u2019re switching to Nestle chocolate.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nestle will cost a bit more because of the shipping necessary from its plant in Morrocco, but ultimately, the two companies hope to have a long and prosperous business arrangement.<\/p>\n
Hershey CEO Joe Barron says he wishes he could take back the wokeness decision, but it\u2019s far too late for that. \u201cIt looks like we\u2019ll join M&Ms on this one,\u201d he told reporters,\u201d people still need woke s\u2019mores.\u201d<\/p>\n
Analysts at Pew Research say the likelihood of Hershey losing its place as the number one chocolate for s\u2019mores is unlikely unless Nestle can quickly develop a chocolate bar. \u201cMorsels don\u2019t work as well with melting marshmallows,\u201d said lead researcher Art Tubolls, \u201cwe\u2019ve had several children burn themselves in testing.\u201d<\/p>\n
