Kid Buys Dinner for Cops, Next Day Two Police Cars Stop at His Mom\u2019s House<\/p>\n

A boy sees two lonely policemen and spends the money he\u2019d saved for his mom\u2019s birthday present to cheer them up. The next day, two police cars pull up at his house.<\/p>\n

Dean missed his dad. Officer Frank O\u2019Neal had passed away in the line of duty six months before, and not a day went by that Dean didn\u2019t think about him, his smile, his laugh.<\/p>\n

After Frank\u2019s death, Dean\u2019s mom, Amy, moved them to California, away from the heartbreaking memories. So why did Dean\u2019s heart stop whenever he saw a police officer?<\/p>\n

Dean was at the mall, looking for a birthday present for his mom. It was going to be a hard day, Amy\u2019s first birthday without Frank, so Dean wanted to get her something special.<\/p>\n

He\u2019d dipped into his savings and was looking for something his dad would have bought. He had his eye on a pretty bracelet that would wipe out every cent he had.<\/p>\n

As Dean walked in, he noticed a police car parked outside the mall\u2019s side entrance, and inside were two policemen. He walked past and greeted them.<\/p>\n

\u201cHi,\u201d he smiled. \u201cYou guys on a stakeout?\u201d<\/p>\n

The older police officer grinned. \u201cHey, kid!\u201d he said. \u201cNot really, we\u2019ve been asked to keep an eye on a person of interest who hangs around here, but now we\u2019re stuck!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah,\u201d sighed the younger cop. \u201cThe guys who are supposed to take over got caught up in a hit-and-run downtown. No lunch for us!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s too bad,\u201d Dean said sympathetically. He waved to the officers and walked into the mall\u2019s air-conditioned interior. Poor guys! Hungry and boiling in their squad car!<\/p>\n

That was when he had an idea he knew was inspired by his dad. He walked to the pizza takeaway and ordered a large double pepperoni and cheese and a couple of ice-cold sodas.<\/p>\n

Dean walked outside and took the pizza and drinks to the patrol car. \u201cHey,\u201d he said. \u201cI want you guys to have this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cKid,\u201d the older man protested. \u201cYou shouldn\u2019t have!\u201d<\/p>\n

Dean shrugged, embarrassed. \u201cIt\u2019s no biggie,\u201d he said. \u201cYou know, my dad was a cop. I\u2026 I guess I want to do something nice for his fellow officers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere\u2019s your dad?\u201d asked the younger cop.<\/p>\n

Dean pressed his lips together so they wouldn\u2019t tremble before he said: \u201cHe died six months ago. We lived in Portland, but my mom wanted us to have a fresh start.<\/p>\n

\u201cI miss him, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n

The older man said gently: \u201cI know. He died in the line of duty?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah,\u201d Dean said. \u201cThey said he was a hero, and they have us a medal and everything? But I still miss him. I wish he hadn\u2019t been a hero. I need a dad more than a hero.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know what you mean,\u201d said the younger cop. \u201cWhat\u2019s your name?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDean,\u201d he said. \u201cDean O\u2019Neal. I\u2019m supposed to be buying my mom a birthday present for tomorrow. She doesn\u2019t want to celebrate or make a cake or anything. She\u2019s really sad.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou hang in there, kid,\u201d the older officer said. \u201cIt does get better\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Dean shrugged. \u201cI guess,\u201d he said. \u201cMom said it would be better in California, but all it is is lonely. Anyway\u2026 See you around!\u201d Dean went back into the mall to look for a card for his mom.<\/p>\n

After what he spent on the pizza, there just wasn\u2019t enough money for the bracelet. He found a card he thought she\u2019d like and headed home. He never imagined he\u2019d see the policemen again.<\/p>\n

When Dean arrived from school the next afternoon, there were two police cars parked outside his door! He immediately thought something was wrong and ran into the house shouting: \u201cMOM!\u201d<\/p>\n

His mom was coming out of the kitchen, blushing and looking flustered. Someone had put up a big \u2018Happy Birthday\u2019 banner in the lounge, and wonderful smells were drifting from the kitchen.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom?\u201d Dean asked. \u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d<\/p>\n

That was when the older policeman Dean had met outside the mall walked in, carrying a big, fancy birthday cake. \u201cHey there, Dean!\u201d the officer said, smiling. \u201cYou\u2019re just in time!\u201d<\/p>\n

Three other officers were in the kitchen, slicing and dicing stuff and cooking up a storm! \u201cWhat\u2026\u201d Dean gasped. \u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the welcoming committee,\u201d said the older officer. \u201cWe learned the family of a fellow officer had mover into our town, and we wanted to make you feel welcome!\u201d<\/p>\n

That was when Dean spotted a pile of presents on the sofa. \u201cWhat\u2019s this?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

Dean\u2019s mom said: \u201cThey somehow found out it was my birthday! Isn\u2019t it so nice? They all brought me presents!\u201d<\/p>\n

The older officer winked at Dean. \u201cMa\u2019am, we are here to protect and to serve!\u201d<\/p>\n

The evening that could have been sad and lonely turned out to be a lot of fun for Dean and Amy. The four policemen served an amazing dinner, sang \u2018Happy Birthday,\u2019 and even washed the dishes before they left.<\/p>\n

They also gave Amy and Dean an invitation to the Police Picnic. \u201cDean,\u201d Amy said. \u201cFor the first time, I feel we\u2019re not alone. We\u2019re going to be OK.\u201d<\/p>\n
