Behar, 77, would like to retire as the resident liberal on the ABC daytime talk show after her contract ends in the summer of 2023.
\nShe revealed her plans in a new interview for the paperback of the non-fiction book \u201cLadies Who Punch:
\nThe Explosive Inside Story of \u2018The View\u2019\u201d by Variety\u2019s Ramin Setoodeh.
\n\u201cI have a three-year contract,\u201d Behar said in the book.
\n\u201cBut that doesn\u2019t mean I can\u2019t leave if I want to, because they can\u2019t really do anything to me at this point.
\nI don\u2019t see myself staying for more [time]. That\u2019s it! I could be wrong. If I\u2019m as fabulous in [2022] as I am now, I\u2019ll think about. But the chances of that happening\u2026\u201d She paused to reflect. \u201cYou know, time marches on. I\u2019m not a kid.\u201d
\nMultiple sources on \u201cThe View\u201d have confirmed that Behar has been floating a 2023 exit from the show.
\nA spokesperson from ABC denied that Behar would be leaving. \u201cThis is not true,\u201d a network rep said. \u201cJoy was asked what happens at the end of her contract and as she herself made clear in the interview, if she\u2019s \u2018as fabulous in [2023] as I am now,\u2019 she will be in her seat at the table.\u201d
\nIf Behar follows through with her plan, she\u2019ll leave \u201cThe View\u201d right before she turns 80. Creator Barbara Walters departed the show in 2014, at the age of 84.
\nBehar has been on \u201cThe View\u201d longer than any other co-host.
\nShe joined the talk show when it launched in 1997 after auditioning for Walters, and she\u2019s weathered countless exits and reboots over three decades as the TV landscape has changed.<\/p>\n
In 2013, Behar was fired when ABC daytime executives decided that \u201cThe View\u201d should be less political (an idea that seems laughable now).
\nBut two years later, in 2015, she was brought back to the Hot Topics table as ratings sank without her, and she continues to thrive with her quick commentary on the latest scandals from the Trump White House.
\nOn March 13, Behar took a leave from \u201cThe View\u201d to self-isolate as a safety precaution against the coronavirus.
\nAs the other co-hosts \u2014 Whoopi Goldberg, Meghan McCain and Sunny Hostin \u2014 started working remotely, Behar has appeared on the show via a satellite from the Hamptons, where she\u2019s been living.<\/p>\n
The paperback edition of \u201cLadies Who Punch\u201d comes out next week from St. Martin\u2019s Press.
