In fact, the intended victims fought back so hard that the robber ended up dead, causing some to say the guys took things way too far in their act of \u201cself-defense.\u201d Did they, though? The men were walking home from a bar near Pacific Avenue and St. Albans Place in the Eltingville neighborhood when Compton reportedly told them to \u201cgive me all your sh*t,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblaze.com\/news\/mugger-out-on-parole-for-attempted-robbery-dies-after-two-men-he-tried-to-rob-with-fake-gun-turned-the-tables-on-him\">The Blaze<\/a>\u00a0reported. Unfortunately for Compton, he would get way more than he bargained for.<\/p>\n<p>Even though Compton appeared to be armed, his intended victims fought back, using martial arts to defend themselves. One of the men grabbed Compton\u2019s gun, which turned out to be fake. The pair wrestled with Compton, restraining him. One of the men got behind Compton, grabbed him around the neck, and pulled him to the ground while the other called 911.\u00a0During the struggle, Compton fell unconscious,\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/new-york\/nyc-crime\/ny-mugger-staten-island-fake-gun-20220913-g3rnkvutbze3lk3iv3sxqvvseu-story.html\">New York Daily News<\/a>\u00a0reported.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_73816\" class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-73816 lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/taphaps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/16299176_10154993589882265_4357607611578003620_n-640x731.jpg\" alt=\"Robert Compton\" data-src=\"https:\/\/taphaps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/16299176_10154993589882265_4357607611578003620_n-640x731.jpg\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Robert Compton (Photo Credit:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=10154993589882265&amp;set=pb.785527264.-2207520000..&amp;type=3\">Facebook<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Police arrived at the scene and performed CPR on Compton. \u201cHe robbed us at gunpoint,\u201d one of the men told responding officers. All three men involved \u2014 Compton and the two men he allegedly tried to rob \u2014 were taken to Staten Island University Hospital North. While the two men who turned the tables on Compton were treated for minor injuries, the robbery suspect died.<\/p>\n<div class=\"afw afw_custom  afw_ad afwadid-113  \" data-ad-id=\"113\"><\/div>\n<p>It was later revealed that Robert Compton had a long criminal history, including grand larceny and assaulting a police officer. He spent over four years in prison for attempted robbery before he was paroled. Even with his questionable past, however, Compton\u2019s family had questions. They didn\u2019t understand why he died during an attempted robbery with a fake gun.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Family left with questions after attempted robber found dead in NYC\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XYP03Opf8v8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt sounds like it should be investigated a lot more,\u201d Compton\u2019s cousin George Pirola told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abc7ny.com\/staten-island-nyc-robber-killed-armed-robbery\/12224702\/\">WABC-TV<\/a>. \u201cSo, two guys, why didn\u2019t they just hold him down, call 911? That\u2019s that,\u201d he asked. \u201cI\u2019m experienced in martial arts; my wife is too, and you know when you have somebody passed out, and you let it go at that point,\u201d Pirola continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt didn\u2019t sound right to me. You know, two martial arts guys from what I read knocked the gun out of his hand and then choked him out. But they choked him to death. Basically, they killed the kid after they had him choked out,\u201d Pirola furthered, referring to his 33-year-old cousin as \u201cthe kid.\u201d As for Compton\u2019s criminal history, Pirola seemed to believe it was irrelevant. \u201cHe\u2019s got some scrapes,\u201d Pirola admitted but quickly added, \u201cBut nothing like that. I couldn\u2019t imagine him trying to do something like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_73814\" class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-73814 lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/taphaps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/cousin-george-640x483.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-src=\"https:\/\/taphaps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/cousin-george-640x483.jpg\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Robert Compton\u2019s cousin George Pirola (Photo Credit:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XYP03Opf8v8&amp;t=143s&amp;ab_channel=EyewitnessNewsABC7NY\">Screenshot<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Of course, there are two sides to every story, and in this one, the other side is claiming this was clearly an act of self-defense. \u201cOur clients, two hard-working young men, were the victims of a terrifying armed robbery by a career criminal,\u201d Louis Gelormino, the attorney representing the two men, noted. \u201cWe are grateful that the District Attorney\u2019s Office and the NYPD conducted a complete and thorough investigation of this matter. Our prayers go out to the family of the deceased.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seeming to add merit to that version of events, Richard Vitale, a neighbor of one of the men involved, said, \u201cI\u2019ve known him since he was a little boy,\u201d and called him a stand-up guy. \u201cI heard a rumor that he took karate,\u201d Vitale elaborated. \u201cHe\u2019s outgoing, he has a lot of friends. He gets along with everybody. He\u2019d be the last person I would think would be connected to this,\u201d he explained, defending his friend. According to Vitale, he believes his neighbor was in the \u201cwrong place\u201d at the \u201cwrong time.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_73817\" class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-73817 lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/taphaps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/wrong-place-wrong-time-640x373.webp\" alt=\"\" data-src=\"https:\/\/taphaps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/wrong-place-wrong-time-640x373.webp\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Richard Vitale, who knew one of the men who turned the tables on Robert Compton, said he believes his neighbor was in the \u201cwrong place\u201d at the \u201cwrong time.\u201d (Photo Credit:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XYP03Opf8v8&amp;t=143s&amp;ab_channel=EyewitnessNewsABC7NY\">Screenshot<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While I can understand how the story might not \u201cadd up\u201d for Robert Compton\u2019s family, who want to remember their loved one in a positive light and believe the men could have \u201cstopped\u201d and spared his life, there really is a reasonable, scientific, unmalicious explanation: Fear and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/taphaps.com\/johnathon-grayer-school-bus-22a\/\">adrenaline<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"afw afw_custom  afw_ad afwadid-114  \" data-ad-id=\"114\">\n<div id=\"rc-widget-7c328e\" data-rc-widget=\"\" data-widget-host=\"habitat\" data-endpoint=\"\/\/trends.revcontent.com\" data-widget-id=\"274989\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>. Although it\u2019s unclear at what point the intended victims realized the gun was fake, it was pointed at them in a threatening manner. And, one never knows exactly how they might react in such a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/taphaps.com\/exotic-french-bulldogs-shootout-1\/\">fight or flight<\/a>\u201d situation.<\/p>\n<p>Once you start fighting for your life, it\u2019s hard to switch that off as adrenaline courses through your body. You\u2019re only thought at the time is protecting your own life. So, there is a valuable lesson to be learned here. When you brandish a weapon, fake or not, you will likely get the exact response you hoped for \u2014 and that\u2019s having your intended victim feel threatened as they believe it\u2019s real. What you might not be prepared for, however, is how hard some will\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/taphaps.com\/raul-mendez-mass-shooting\/\">fight to stay alive<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 and it would seem Robert Compton found that out the hard way.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A mugger, who was out on parole for attempted robbery, tried to rob two men, but they quickly turned the tables on the would-be thief.
