The stock price of Unilever, the parent company of Ben & Jerry\u2019s, has plummeted by nearly $2 billion due to calls to boycott the ice cream company over their controversial 4th of July tweet. That tweet called for the return of \u201cstolen Indigenous land\u201d by the United States to Native American tribes. \u201cThis 4th of July, it\u2019s high time we recognize that the US exists on stolen Indigenous land and commit to returning it\u201d read the tweet according to\u00a0the\u00a0New York Post<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The statement by the company\u00a0said that<\/a>\u00a0\u201c[t]he faces on Mount Rushmore [those of former presidents of the United States] are the faces of men who actively worked to destroy Indigenous cultures and ways of life, to deny Indigenous people their basic rights.\u201d It also called the same men whose faces were engraved on the mountain \u201ccolonizers, four white men\u2014two of whom enslaved people and all of whom were hostile to Indigenous people and values.\u201d The call to action by the company was to start this process of land restoration by\u00a0returning \u201cthat sacred place\u00a0 [Mount Rushmore] to the Lakota [tribe].\u201d<\/p>\n

As the\u00a0New York Post\u00a0<\/em>noted,<\/a>\u00a0Unilever is an Anglo-Dutch firm and Ben & Jerry\u2019s remains independent from that firm insofar as it retains the ability to sound out its own views on politics. The result of that tweet and statement by the ice cream company has been that Unilever\u2019s market cap has dropped from $130.2 billion to $128.5 billion.<\/p>\n

Conservative-leaning media outlets were quick to trumpet the downturn as the effects of the boycott. Citizen Free Press on Twitter wrote \u201cEat that, Ben and Jerry\u2019s\u201d and shared a screengrab from Fox News depicting the falling numbers in market value for Unilever.<\/p>\n
