Recently, a 75-year-old woman was home alone in Oakland, California, when criminals broke into her house around 2 a.m.\u00a0 Reportedly, the intruders were armed, so the elderly woman was forced to take defensive measures.\u00a0 The woman stood her ground, firing at the suspects, who then returned fire before fleeing the scene.<\/p>\n

Twitter account, Defensive Gun Use Tracker, posted an update on the story, titled,\u00a0\u201cJuly 26, 2023: An elderly Oakland, CA, woman exchanged gunfire with two armed intruders who broke into her home in the middle of the night. Despite the intruders firing 17 to 20 rounds at her, the woman wasn\u2019t injured and they ultimately fled.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The break-in occurred in the Chabot Park neighborhood around 2 o\u2019clock in the morning.\u00a0 Two men kicked down the house\u2019s front door and began searching the house with guns drawn.\u00a0 The armed criminals burst into the woman\u2019s bedroom, demanding she hand over her valuables.\u00a0 Instead of complying with the intruders, she decided to take matters into her own hands and stand up to these individuals.\u00a0 The woman grabbed her handgun, a .357 magnum, and was able to fire a single shot at the intruders.<\/p>\n

The criminals returned fire before fleeing the residence.\u00a0 Fortunately, the elderly woman was not hurt by the exchange of gunfire.\u00a0 The 75-year-old is being called a hero by her neighbors for her brave actions that thwarted the intruders.\u00a0\u00a0According<\/a>\u00a0to the woman\u2019s daughter,\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s absolutely unbelievable what she was able to do.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The woman is also being called a \u201csuperwoman\u201d for the defensive actions which protected herself and her home.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s amazing. She is a superwoman. We\u2019re all just lauding her and just amazed at her wherewithal that happened on,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0her daughter continued.<\/p>\n

Calvin Walker, a neighbor of the woman,\u00a0said<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cShe had the presence of mind to reach into her nightstand and get a weapon. And she had it under her covers, and when she saw an opening, she fired a shot.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>The intruders fired roughly 17 to 20 shots in return before leaving with valuables.\u00a0\u201cWe went over afterwards and we saw gunshots all in the walls,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Walker continued.<\/p>\n

Oakland City Councilmember Treva Reid stated,\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s a miracle that she\u2019s alive after the number of shots that were fired in her home.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>Other neighbors agree that the elderly woman is a hero who did what was necessary to ward off these dangerous intruders.\u00a0\u201cThis woman is a hero,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0said one neighbor.\u00a0\u201cShe kept her wits about her.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The woman\u2019s daughter shared a hopeful message that her mother\u2019s actions would be a warning, causing criminals to think twice about committing home invasions.\u00a0\u201cI believe that this is a message also for the criminals, that people in Oakland, we\u2019re tired of the lawlessness. People are standing up. People are fighting back,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0she said.<\/p>\n

Another person stated that criminals are risking their lives when committing such crimes, given that residents in the area are armed. \u201cThey\u2019re really \u2013 they\u2019re playing with their lives because all these people out here are armed,\u201d said neighbor Lynn Baranco.\u00a0 Reportedly, similar crimes have occurred in the area recently.<\/p>\n
