{"id":3603,"date":"2023-08-11T15:58:19","date_gmt":"2023-08-11T15:58:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailynewsintime.net\/?p=3603"},"modified":"2023-08-11T15:58:19","modified_gmt":"2023-08-11T15:58:19","slug":"soon-to-be-restaurant-faces-backlash-over-controversial-name-owner-refuses-to-apologize","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailynewsintime.net\/index.php\/2023\/08\/11\/soon-to-be-restaurant-faces-backlash-over-controversial-name-owner-refuses-to-apologize\/","title":{"rendered":"Soon-To-Be Restaurant Faces Backlash Over Controversial Name, Owner Refuses To Apologize"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A yet-to-be-opened restaurant in Amarillo has become the focus of intense racial controversy because of its name and sign.<\/p>\n<p>Jesse Quackenbush, an attorney and owner of \u201cBig Beaners\u201d restaurant, stated that the inspiration for the name came from the fact that the restaurant would be selling Mexican food, coffee, and beans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd there\u2019s no intention of racism behind that sign, the sign was merely was trying to connect the brand with the product,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Abel Bosquez, president of the local chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens, had a different opinion about the restaurant\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a word that was used like you beaners, you wetback, you dirty Mexicans,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Quackenbush responded: \u201cIf anyone took the time to read the menu and look at the logo and understand it\u2019s a kidney bean not an Abel Bosquez or some Mexican that\u2019s bored at some committee. There\u2019s no racist intention, I\u2019m not a racist, we don\u2019t cater to racists, we don\u2019t have anything to do with racists, so Abel Bosquez is simply wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy is it a brown bean with a Mexican hat, a big mustache and pointy boots\u2014that is offensive to Mexicanos,\u201d Bosquez stated.<\/p>\n<p>When asked by ABC7 News why he didn\u2019t use big bean, big frijoles or something else in the same line, Quackenbush stated: \u201cBecause we wanted to use big beaners, we liked the name\u2014kind of like Big Texan, the word big, we wanted to have Hispanic culture or Latin culture enveloped into our mascot and logo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that the majority of Hispanics were not offended by the name or sign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of the people that are responding saying \u2018I\u2019m alright with that\u2019\u2014they probably haven\u2019t experienced the racism part,\u201d Bosquez stated.<\/p>\n<p>When asked whether he would apologize for the sign, Quackenbush responded: \u201cThe answer to that is no. I apologize for nothing related to this business, I think this is a big hoax and a scam that\u2019s been set up by a couple former restaurants here that recently have gone out of business and they just got so outraged because a white guy is opening a Mexican restaurant\u2014that\u2019s what\u2019s going on here.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.opposingviews.com\/.image\/t_share\/MTczMTcxNTM4OTQ0NTk5ODQ0\/101204817-3465025856859251-7778651652453564416-o.jpg\" alt=\"Photo Credit: Facebook\/Brad Torch\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo Credit:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=3465025853525918&amp;set=a.119830854712118&amp;type=3&amp;theater\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Facebook\/Brad Torch<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>However, Bosquez refuted this, and stated that even if the owner was of Mexican descent, the meaning would remain the same.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRacism is racism regardless of who does it. I can be a racist against my own people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Amarillo Hispanic Chamber of Commerce released the following statement:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Amarillo Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has never contacted Mr. Jesse Quackenbush regarding the \u201cBig Beaners\u201d name he chose for his new restaurant. The comments on his social media post regarding the Hispanic chamber are not factual. We have received many complaints and questions regarding the name of the restaurant. We hear the concerns and we understand.
