In St. Louis, Missouri, the management of a Family Dollar has found themselves in the public spotlight after posting a sign that makes one small request of their customers before entering the store. The sign sparked a firestorm with cries of racism and discrimination that eventually led to the sign being removed.<\/h3>\n

With crime increasing around the St. Louis area, local businesses can\u2019t be too safe when it comes to protecting their business. This may be what prompted the management of a Family Dollar to request that people entering their store remove their hoods, which could conceal\u00a0someone\u2019s identity. However, some were quick to claim that the sign was racist.<\/p>\n

The sign read, \u201cAll Customers: Please remove hoods before entering Family Dollar.\u201d For the objective and unbiased thinker, the reasoning behind the sign makes perfect sense. It ensures that everyone who enters the store is intent on following the rules, knowing that the cameras can\u00a0get a clear shot of their\u00a0face, according to\u00a0The Daily Caller<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Kusloshiai Webb, a St. Louis resident, agreed with the sign, explaining, \u201cThey want people\u2019s faces to be seen by the cameras and sometimes when you have on a hood, it might block your facial view.\u201d Judy Cardona, a Family Dollar customer, echoed Webb\u2019s sentiment, saying, \u201cIt gives you more picture of the person.\u201d<\/p>\n

Frequent and recent robberies took place at the chain store\u2019s nearby locations. So, you can understand why they would have put up such a sign. In the weeks before the sign was placed in the store window, a clerk at the Family Dollar on South Jefferson was held at gunpoint during an alleged robbery. During a separate incident at Family Dollar\u2019s South Grand location, a man opened fire.<\/p>\n

However, not everyone felt the sign was a reasonable security request because of the sign\u2019s \u201cdiscriminatory undertone.\u201d When asked his thoughts on the sign, customer Roger Williams explained, \u201cI would call it discrimination. That\u2019s not right. It shouldn\u2019t matter that you\u2019re going in there with your hood on. If you\u2019re not stealing, and you\u2019re buying, purchasing something, what\u2019s the problem? That shouldn\u2019t be an issue.\u201d<\/p>\n
