Emil Foley: \u201cThe onscreen chemistry between the two of them was terrific, but it was a different story once the camera was turned off. They couldn\u2019t have stayed farther apart from each other.\u201dGossett also claims that Winger didn\u2019t think much of Gere\u2019s acting and wrote that she once described Gere as \u201ca brick wall.\u201d And, the film\u2019s director, Taylor Hackford, whom she also did not like, she referred to as \u201canimal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Winger, a free spirit in real life and in her role as Emma, also clashed with the prolific MacLaine, a glamourous, eccentric and seasoned veteran.<\/p>\n
Their first meeting set the stage for their relationship.\u201cTo see how my character would feel I was wearing all my leftover movie-star fur coats,\u201d MacLaine said in an interview with\u00a0People. \u201cThere was Debra dressed in combat boots and a miniskirt\u2026I thought, \u2018Oh my goodness.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
People writes, \u201cIndeed, the set became the source of Hollywood\u2019s most relished rumors. Winger wanted top billing.
