The Pope said Trump’s large-scale deportation plan is “not how you solve problems”.<\/p>\n

Pope Francis has blasted Donald Trump\u2019s plans to deport thousands of undocumented migrants from the US after taking office as a \u201cdisgrace\u201d.<\/p>\n

The president-elect has pledged to launch the biggest-ever deportation of illegal migrants in the country\u2019s history after his inauguration today.<\/p>\n

But the Pope has urged him against the drastic measures, accusing Trump of forcing \u201cpoor wretches that don\u2019t have anything [to] foot the bill\u201d for the migration problem in an Italian TV address from the Vatican on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis won\u2019t do! This is not the way to solve things. That\u2019s not how things are resolved,\u201d he said in an impassioned response to questions about the prospect of the \u201cdisgraceful\u201d new immigration policy.<\/p>\n

\nIt\u2019s not the first time Trump has clashed with the bishop of Rome over his tough stance on migration.<\/p>\n

Pope Francis, who is the first Latin American to lead the Roman Catholic Church, slammed the first Trump administration\u2019s plans to build a wall along the US-Mexico border as \u201cnot Christian\u201d in 2016.<\/p>\n

He also shared a more optimistic message to the incoming president, however, offering him \u201ccordial greetings\u201d and emphasising the importance of \u201cpeace and reconciliation among peoples\u201d with \u201cno room for hatred, discrimination or exclusion\u201d ahead of Monday’s inauguration.<\/p>\n

Trump met Pope Francis, who was elected to the role in 2013, during a trip to Rome during his first presidential term.<\/p>\n

Prominent US bishops have also spoken out against the immigration plans, which could be enacted through a raft of first-day orders. Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich, whose city has been speculated to be \u201cground zero\u201d for the deportation \u201craids\u201d, described the reports as “profoundly disturbing and deeply wounding\u201d.<\/p>\n

In a statement delivered from the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City on Sunday, Cardinal Cupich said governments have the responsibility to protect borders and communities.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we also are committed to defending the rights of all people, and protecting their human dignity,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n

Cardinal Robert McElroy, the incoming archbishop of Washington DC, also said Trump\u2019s plans were \u201cincompatible with the Catholic doctrine\u201d in their contradiction of the Biblical call to \u201cwelcome the stranger\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
